Over the next few weeks, the Catawba County United Way will be highlighting the executive and program directors of the CCUW's funded partner agencies for 2022. Every year, the CCUW looks to partner with local non-profits and help support their programs focused on improving the lives of those in need in the areas of education, financial stability and health.
This week we learn about Jamie Brown – Chief Executive Officer, Sipe’s Orchard Home - transitional housing for ages 17-21.
1. How long have you been with your agency and have worked with non-profits overall?
I’ve been with Sipe’s almost 9 years. Started in non-profits at the end of 1997, almost 25 years ago.
2. What drew you to your current position and this kind of work?
I’ve always worked with children and youth. Became interested in teen homeless and aging out of the system years ago, so having a chance to work with this population at Sipe’s was something I always wanted to do.
3.What is the impact of your agency in our community?
I could fill up a few pages answering this one. If I’m trying to be succinct, I would say there are very few services for homeless teens and youth aging out of care, and we try to serve that gap. In addition, our Pre-K meets the need of little one’s (4-year-olds) by providing quality early education.
4. What does a good day at work look like?
Seeing our youth meet milestones, graduation day from High School is a big day for us, getting jobs, drivers licenses’ etc.
5. The non-profit world can be stressful. What’s your favorite way to relax?
Time with family, reading a little, simple things. Having fishing ponds here on campus is a plus as well.
6. Do you have a favorite book/movie and why?
Saving Private Ryan, Moneyball, Miracle, stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
