Community Vision: Increase Opportunities for Children and Youth to Achieve Their Potential

Our Goal for Education . . . .

Increase the number of high school

graduates within Catawba County

Focus:   Ready for Kindergarten
                Academic Achievement
Parental/Guardian Engagement
                College/Workforce Readiness
Catawba County United Way wants an increase in the number of students in our community who graduate high school on time.
A student’s success is determined early.  Starting school ready to learn gives children the background they need to be academically successful.  Programs and activities that expose children to the fundamentals of education early put them on a path to succeed in school.
Children who are unable to read at grade level by 4th grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.   It is important that attention be paid to early grade literacy and literacy support which, in turn, increases their chances of staying in school.
Making strides towards increasing graduation rates will no doubt have a positive effect on our community.  Graduates who are in college/workforce ready can mean a lower unemployment rate, lower crime rate and can draw new businesses to our area.
(Measured by # of high school graduates in all three systems)
